Davis Enterprise Story, Nov. 20, 2016

Davis Enterprise, November 20, 2016...

Plans are well underway for Davis Grad Night 2017 — an all-night, safe party for all of Davis’ graduating seniors — which takes place Friday, June 9, at Emerson Junior High School, 2121 Calaveras Ave. The party starts after the Davis High School commencement ceremony and lasts till 5 a.m. the next morning.

“Some of you who don’t have a graduating senior in your household might wonder why you should be interested in Grad Night,” spokeswoman Ahna Heller said. “Here’s why: Grad Night in Davis is a community event that seeks parent volunteers from all classes. Some of our volunteers don’t even have children!”

Grad Night started in Davis in 1985 as a drug- and alcohol-free event for graduating seniors from all Davis high schools. Since it began, it relies on support from the whole community — individuals and businesses alike — and there are lots of volunteer opportunities for all types of interests and talents.

Tickets: Grad Night tickets are available for purchase throughout the year. All DJUSD students who are eligible to walk in their graduation ceremony can attend Grad Night. Ticket prices are $75 until Jan. 31, which the price increases to $85 through May 30. After that, tickets may be purchased on the night of the event, for $100.

“Order early for the best deal and consider giving your graduating senior a Grad Night ticket as a holiday gift,” Heller said.

Volunteers needed: Some of the parent-run activities at Grad Night are in need of help now. For example:

— A jewelry and beading coordinator is needed to organize the activity in advance. Most of the needed materials are on hand, and there’s a budget to purchase what isn’t.

“This will not require that you staff the station the night of Grad Night so it would work for a parent of a senior, but we would love any Davis parent to step into the role,” Heller said.

— A volunteer is needed to set up and work with the crew to get the mini-golf holes — which already are built — in place on the day of the party.

“We also need a golf bag to store the putters that we have and scorecards for the activity,” Heller said. ” Staffing Grad Night would not be your responsibility.”

Contact Pam Pacelli at pacellimorgan@gmail.com and let her know if you have a donation or want to volunteer for either role.

Decorating: The committee is off to a good start forming teams and deciding on designs related to the secret theme. Why is the theme secret? Parents want the graduating seniors to be surprised and to have a memorable night.

After the new year, the Decorating Committee will begin asking the community for donations and support.
