United Nations Association, Davis Chapter

What we are about ....

We are a chapter of approximately 65 members, part of the Northern California Division of UNA-USA.  We are an all-volunteer, low-budget organization, funded primarily through memberships.

The Davis Chapter is dedicated to the same values that led to the creation of the United Nations in 1945:

  • Human rights for all people around the world
  • Combating world poverty
  • Seeking peaceful resolutions of conflict, instead of violence and war
  • Protecting the world’s environment

Regular chapter programs include:

  • Annual United Nations Day celebration around October 24
  • Community-wide Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF around Halloween, year-round effort to collect for UNICEF through local UNA/UNICEF bank account ($15,000 collected in 2009!)
  • Celebrating the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in early December
  • United Nations Association Film Festival (UNAFF) Traveling Film Festival Davis with human rights documentaries from around the world in February or March
  • National High School Essay Contest on the United Nations, with award ceremony for local participants in February.  Unfortunately, this has been cancelled for 2011.
  • International Film Series on first and third Fridays of the month (except July & August) at International House, continuous since April of 1997
  • Observation of International Day of Peace (September 21)

Our chapter also donated a “Peace Rose Garden” to the Davis community in 1995 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the UN charter in San Francisco.  The Peace Roses are located at 600 A Street and are maintained by UNA members.

Membership and membership benefits:

Members receive ten issues of the Sacramento/Davis UNA newsletter per year and may retrieve electronic issues of the national UNA magazine The InterDependent online.

Membership in UNA-USA does not have to involve a time commitment: some lead, others attend events that interest them, many join simply to become part of the national constituency for positive US leadership in world affairs and to support the ideals of the United Nations.
