Letter to the Editor: Helping UNICEF makes you feel good

from the Davis Enterprise, November 10, 2011

We are writing to you about UNICEF. On Halloween, all the Davis schools get little cardboard boxes to trick-or-treat for UNICEF. Some kids do it, but we think that a lot more could. If all the kids in every school did it, in one evening we could raise thousands of dollars.

To kids: UNICEF helps provide food, water and medicines for children who are very poor in other parts of the world. Once you’ve raised money for UNICEF, you feel good about it. Just $1 provides a protein bar for a starving child. With $25, UNICEF provides 100 kids with safe water for a day.

Trick-or-treating for UNICEF is also a good way to build up your courage, asking grown-ups that you don’t know for things.

To grown-ups: It doesn’t matter if it is nickels or dimes, all that matters is that it counts.

Halloween will not come again for another year, but in the meantime, if you have a small birthday party with five or six kids, you might want to consider asking them to donate to UNICEF instead of bringing a gift, and just get presents from your family.
