UNICEF showcased at U.N. Day celebration

October 20, 2013

from the Davis Enterprise

The public is invited to a free United Nations Day celebration hosted by the Davis chapter of the United Nations Association from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at International House, 10 College Park.

Rosie Breen, second-year global citizenship fellow for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, is coming from San Francisco to speak on “UNICEF’s Critical Role in the Lives of Children.”

She will address each of UNICEF’s core program areas for children, and will showcase items that UNICEF uses in the field, including the “school-in-a-box,” a portable kit with all the supplies needed to hold a classroom anywhere, and a treated mosquito net that helps prevent malaria, the third biggest killer of children globally.

As this program will take place just days before the annual Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign drive by Davis’ schoolchildren, teachers and students are encouraged to attend. Since 1950, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF has raised more than $170 million to help UNICEF provide lifesaving medicine, nutrition, clean water, education and emergency relief to children all over the world.

“Here’s a chance to partake in some hands-on experiences with UNICEF materials and hear about the latest reports from the countries in which UNICEF works,” said local organizer Verena Borton. “UNICEF plays a critical role in the lives of our community’s children by giving them a meaningful opportunity to make a difference for their less fortunate peers around the world.”

A time for questions and answers will follow Breen’s presentation, then refreshments and informal conversation about the work of the United Nations’ Children’s Fund.

Her presentation is co-sponsored by I-House, AAUW and the League of Women Voters of Davis.

On Tuesday, the Davis City Council will present a proclamation to declare Oct. 24 United Nations Day, with the U.N. flag flying at City Hall and elsewhere, and Oct. 27-31 Support UNICEF Week in the city of Davis.
