California Kickoff

January 18-21, 2008

17-1

The 17-1's started 40th overall and were seeded 4th in our pool. We played the following teams on Saturday and finished third meaning that we moved up to 39th.

Force 17-1's - L - 9-25, 16-25
City Beach 17-1's Black - L - 15-25, 13,25
Point Break 17-1 Black - W - 25-20, 25-21

On Sunday we played Xceleration 18's to start the day. We lost 19-25, 15-25. Our next match we played was Nike West 18-1 and we we lost 23-25, 13-25. We finished the tournament 44th.

We also started in a 5-1 rotation on Saturday and then moved to a 6-2. We were very process oriented and we tried many different lines up. Coaches Vanessa and Rachel saw a lot of progress from match to match which was encouraging. We still have a lot of work to do an hope to have better results at our next tournament.

16-1

In our first tournament together I can say I am happy with the performance of the team throughout the weekend. Even though we had finished at 47th position, I felt that the girls had improved as a team and as individual players in the two days we played. The first match was played against a very strong Xceleration 16-1 team. We lost the first set 11-25 but played a very good second set in which we lead the game for a time before falling 17-25. In the second match we played a strong pair of sets, showing another step in their improvement in the loss to Gold Cal 15-1, 24-26 and 17-25. In our third match the girls again showed marked improvement by taking the match against SF Juniors RoShamBO 15-1 to 3 sets; 25-17,25-27, and 9-15.

Even though we had lost to both Point Break and City Beach teams on the second day, I started to see various girls apply and implement more and more of the various aspects of the game that we had worked on in the previous weeks and previous matches . I feel that as time and the process goes on, we will see a very strong and confident team emerge that will be very successful in future tournaments

15-1

The Davis 15-1 Team started off in a tough pool of 16's on Sunday at Diablo Valley College.  Their opponents were SF Juniors RoShamBo 16-1 (L, 25-13, 25-5), NorCal Black 16-1 (L, 25-4, 25-8) and Golden Bear 16-2 (L, 25-18, 25-11).  15-1 was seeded 52nd and finished 52nd for the day.

The scores do not reflect the effort and heart that was put forth by the girls of Davis 15-1!  Having never played as a team before, the girls worked hard, gave it their all and stood their ground against some seasoned 16 and under teams.  Outside hitter Cassie Varland had a solid day at the net with very consistent hitting!

Day 2 started out at Deer Valley College against Club Elite 16-1 where they fell short losing 25-15, 25-15.  During the Consolation Semi Final the 15-1's met up against Quake City No Floor 16-1's.  In a very scrappy match, the girls were close, losing the first game 25-18 and the 2nd game 25-11.

Middle blocker Caity Richard played awesome defense in the front and back rows, Setter Megan Bacchini had quick feet and great back row defense!  Final seeding in the tournament was 53rd.

15-2

This weekend Davis Volleyball Club 15-2 started their season off in a four team pool, at Berkeley High School, in the California Kickoff tournament.  The 15's were playing up in the 16's division in the tournament and their first match put them up against Absolute 16-1.  Davis dropped game one 25-6 and game two 25-8.

Though a tough match, it was highlighted by strong passing performances by Ashley Rabamo and Celine Bertero

The second match of the day was also a tough one for the Davis girls as they were put up against another 16's team, Vision 16-2 who was ranked 4th in the tournament overall.  Davis lost games one and two 25-7, 25-8.  Once again there were sting strong performances in the loss.

Both Gilanne Del Rosario and Avalon Lucero both had kills for points against a tough blocking team.  The last match of pool play on Saturday was against Golden Bear 15-2.  Davis rallied after their first two matches but came up just a bit short, losing in two games 25-14, 25-19.  It was in this match, however, that signs of team chemistry really started to be evident on the Davis side of the net.

Setter’s Madison King and Nickole Hunley-Moore started really started to connect with their hitters toward the end of the day.  On Monday morning, Davis played in a four team bracket at Deer Valley High School.  After reffing the first match of the day, Davis lost to Force 15-2, 25-11, 25-12.  The girls didn’t allow the first match to bring them down as they had to play another match immediately after.  Davis went up against Club Pacific Black 15-1 and in a three game nail biter pulled out the win.  Davis lost game one to Club Pacific 30-28.  The Davis girls came out in a game two and handled the opposing team beating them 25-10.  In game three Davis started with all the momentum and ended up winning a close game 15-13.

Every girl on the team was a contributor to this first win of the season.  Middle blocker’s Megan Bielwski, Adriane Wisner, and Sammy Covington all outplayed the middles on the opposing team to help in the win.  The hitters wouldn’t have been able to hit if it hadn’t been for the great passes coming from defensive specialist Melanie Rabamo in the back row.  Nickole Hunley-Moore had several good touches of her block that helped to slow the ball down for the defense and Madison King made key set selections coming down the stretch in game three.

The girls finished 56th in the tournament moving up one spot.

14-1

The 14-1s  began tournament play on Saturday January 19th at the Oakland Convention Center. The first day of the tournament was an eye opener for the girls as well as the coaches. We did not do as well as we should
have, partly because we changed the line up last minute, leaving the players a bit confuse. However, after the girls learned the rotation and players adjusted to their new roles, the girls level of play changed drastically in just one day. We ended up beating a team that beat us the night before and at the end we moved up one spot in our ranking. Overall, we are pleased with the progress and the way the girls adapted to the new line up this weekend.

Record 1 win 4 losses with many close games!
