FAQ
A list of frequently asked questions about the Davis Volleyball Club.
Number 1: What is the Davis Volleyball Club? |
The Davis Volleyball Club (DVBC) is a parent run, non-profit California corporation, which operates in conjunction with the United States Volleyball Association (USVBA) girls program. The USVBA divides the United States into approximately 30 regions. DVBC is part of the Northern California Volleyball Association (NCVA), the region extending North to the Oregon border, South to Fresno, and west to San Francisco and East to Utah. |
Number 2: What is the purpose of the DVBC? |
The purpose of the DVBC is to establish, maintain, and support a junior volleyball program for young women. DVBC goals are to provide players with technical training, instruct teams in power volleyball play, provide competitive volleyball opportunities, and encourage players to develop positive attitudes, teamwork and competitive attributes. |
Number 3: How do you join the DVBC? |
The DVBC is open to girls ages 10 through 18. There are tryouts for Power League teams in the 14, 16 and 18 age divisions. For girls ages 10 to 14, we also offer Fundamental and Area League teams. To learn more about DVBC, contact the Director, Michaela Reed at: mi_mi_volley@yahoo.com, or email us at davisvbc@yahoo.com |
Number 4: How long is the DVBC season? |
The 2006 season begins in January and runs through June. The Power League season ends in mid-June; the Area League ends in mid-May; and the Fundamental teams end in mid-March. |
Number 5: How much are the DVBC season fees? |
The NCVA Handbook states that potential players and their families should receive full disclosure of all season costs. The DVBC strives to comply fully with the NCVA by providing an estimate of the total season cost, to avoid later surprises with added billings for tournaments and travel expenses. For 2006, the DVBC fees range from $990 to $3,100. Fees vary due to the number and location of tournaments and the resulting level of travel and tournament expenses that are expected for each team. |
Number 6: Why are the fees so expensive and what do they cover? |
DVBC is a competitively priced volleyball club in the NCVA. Our fees are inclusive of all expenses to run the club, buy uniforms, pay its coaches and officers, pay tournament entry fees, and lodging for its coaches when applicable. The main culprit in the costs for the Power League Gold-teams, 16 and 18, for 2006 are the increased airfares to National Tournaments because of rising fuel prices. The Board of Directors is making every effort to find ways of decreasing the costs of airfare and other expenses, while maintaining a meaningful volleyball experience for the players. |
Number 7: What do the fees NOT cover? |
DVBC fees do not cover food and personal expenses nor do they include volleyball shoes and clothing that is not part of the standard uniform expense. If a team elects to attend a tournament that is not included in the original schedule, the tournament entry fee, coach’s stipend and coach’s lodging will be an additional expense for the players and their families who elect to participate. Travel and lodging, which is the responsibility of the players and their families, is not included in season fees. The exceptions are the National Tournaments in Las Vegas and Spokane for the 16's &18's Gold- teams. |
Number 8: How do players get to the tournaments? |
Parents are expected to get their player to every tournament. Some parents and team managers may elect to organize carpools. The parents are expected to pay for all travel expenses such as gas and toll charges. DVBC is not liable for players during travel to and from tournaments. |
Number 9: How long is a tournament day and what should my daughter bring to a tournament? |
Tournaments and league play usually start at 8:30am and can end anytime from 3:00 to midnight, depending on the amount of teams in the tournament, if there are playoffs, etc. Because you don’t know how long a tournament/league day can be, you should send your daughter with plenty of water and food. A large water jug is recommended. She should also bring a small cooler filled with extra water, juices, fruit, sandwiches, and other healthy foods. Pack extra food and drink. Players can always bring the uneaten food home. Players also need to bring their complete uniform: extra shirts, spandex, socks, shoes, and kneepads. There can be downtime during a day so bringing homework and reading material is a good idea. |
Number 10: During the course of the season, how soon in advance will I know where teams play? |
DVBC provides the dates of its scheduled tournaments. Unfortunately, tournament locations are often unknown until 1-2 days prior to the tournament (and sometimes subject to change by the NCVA during a multi-day tournament!). The schedules hundreds of teams and playing sites, which is a time consuming process. Please remember this is out of the DVBC’s control, but you will get word just as soon as the director and coaches hear. Visit www.ncva.com to learn the most current schedule and playing site. |
