Power League Qualifier Tournament Results
Results from the 2-day Power League Qualifier
17-1
We started #52 on Saturday. We were in a pool with #13 NorCal
18'-1's and # 77 Marin Jr. Black 18-1's. Our first match was against
Marin Jr.s and we lost in a close 3 game match. Our next match was
against NorCal and we lost in 2 games. We finished pool play
#77. In bracket play we played #92 XLVB Sunkist 18-2's and had no
problem with this team. This was an easy win for our team. Our last
match of the day was against #69 Altamont 17's and we lost in 2
games.
On Sunday since there was a two hour delay we didn't even have our
first match until 5:30pm. We were seeded #77 and played #53 Club
Stockton first. The Davis girls new that this was a big opportunity for
us to move back up to #53. We went and won a close three game match.
Our second match was against #29 Diablo Valley 18-1's and we lost in 2
games but we held our #53 seed. Our last match of the day was against
Altamont 17's. We played them the previous day so this was our second
time playing them in this tournament. Davis lost the first game and we
game back and won the second game 26-24. Davis game out in the third
game and we were up 6-0 in the 3rd. We had a passing breakdown and we
ended up losing 11-15 dropping us back down to #77.
16-1
The Power League Qualifier was the first time that the girls started to really understand their defensive responsibilities in relation to a whole team concept.
They had started out the tournament seeded at 58 and with two tough matches behind them beating City Beach and Santa Cruz Steamers in 3, we were potentially finding ourselves at having achieved the 51 spot going into the cross over for the day. However we ran into a little problem with Xceleration losing that match in three, and ended up with a 94 finish on the day.
On day two we had our work cut out for us and need to hold seed for a chance to move up later in the final bracket playoff. We beat Empire, Adrenaline, Gold Cal, and finally Velocity in straight sets to gain some of the ground we lost the previous day, with a final qualifying seed of 75.
After having a 6 and 1 qualifier, 75 may seem to be a disappointment, but I think the girls finally realized that they are very capable of pulling themselves together as team, and can focus and achieve success. This type of team character gives something to work with in the months to come and shows the type of upward direction we mean to achieve.
15-1
Davis 15-1 started out in a 3 team pool seeded 82nd on
Saturday. After 2 tough losses, we dropped to 135. We
switched courts to find out we were playing against Dynamix 15-1, who
are from Woodland. In a 3 game match, we lost the last game
16-14.
Day 2 started out with a win that pulled us up to seed 123. The
next match was against Xceleration 16-2's where we came out strong and
held our own. Xceleration was able to sneak past us with points
and we lost the match in 2 games. The last match of the day was
another tough loss and we ended the tournament seeded 142.
15-2
A Building Weekend
The Presidents' Day Tournament was a rough weekend for the girls.
However, they stuck with eachother and pulled out a weekend that
bettered them both physically and mentally. The first day was an
experiment day
due to the loss of one of our setters. Nickole stepped
up to the challenge running a 5-1 all the way around the court.
Avalon was moved to the right side and provided a
solid swing that put many of the teams in trouble. Both girls did a
great job of finding a rythm in a new or altered position.
The second day was yet another time for swich-er-roos. During our
second pool of the tournament, one of our middle blockers,
Adriane, was moved to full-time right side and played
all the way around. Not bad for a middle
blocker! She added a strong block against opposing teams' outside
hitters and really made a large impact on our team. With
Adriane moved right side, Sammy
played full time second middle. She handled the increase in
playing time extremely well and learned a lot this weekend. Another
shining star the second day was Ashley with her
serving runs against the Diamonds 15-1. Way to make them work! The last
day tested our team strength. Bracket play put us closer to teams our
level and we certainly battled it out. Unfortunately, we only played 2
matches, but took our last through 3 games. Celine dig
a great job of serve receive in the back row while middle blocker
Megan had a good showing at the net. Melanie stunned
other teams by sticking passes and digging hits while improving on her
communication skills.
The third day really showed how quick they learn the game.
Throughout the tournament, the coaches have been mixing players and
positions up. The players did a great job of adjusting and are now
ready to take on anyone
who challenges at the first Power League! Go Davis!
