Power League Tournament #1 Results
Results from the First Power League Tournament
17-1
The Davis 17-1 had a great day at Power League #1. We were seeded #4
going into the tournament and we finished #3. In pool play
we played Delta Valley 18-2's and we lost 20-25 and 16-25. It was
a slow start for our offense but things quickly changed in our
next match against Club United 18-2. Brittany
Hill and Miranda Gearing can out swinging
tough and provided the team with the offensive power we lacked in our
first match and we game out with a win 25-17, 25-13. In bracket play
our first match was against Club Extreme. Some of the Davis players
know a lot of the Extreme players so it was easy for our team to come
out with confidence and energy; especially Brooke
Peterson. Brooke hit a .750, her best hitting
% so far this year, and Davis won this match in two games 25-21, 25-15.
This win solidified us staying in the Dusk division and not dropping
down. The next match we play was against Main Beach. We lost a close
first game 23-25 but won game two 25-22. The third game was close but
Davis pulled it out 15-10. This win put Davis is the top three and we
ended up playing Delta Valley 18-2's again. This time the match went
three games 19-25, 25-23 and in the third game we lost 13-15. It was a
great match and it was good to see the girls truly battle from start to
finish. Sarah Klemm did a great job in the Libero
position all day and we hope to see continued progress from each of the
girls as the season continues.
16-1
Despite the loooong drive, and varying degrees of illnesses displayed by the players and myself, the girls set a goal of winning to move on the weekend. They brought their confidence that they have started to develop in the previous weeks and again played with a focused desire to do well. Again we used the 5-1 set-up, and the girls became comfortable enough with their roles to allow for some creativity in play during the course of the day.
We played Peninsula Jrs. 16-1, and CVC Navy 16-1 to start off the day in pool play. PJ 16-1 took us to 3 sets and CVC 16-1 was dispatched in 2 sets. Having come out of the pool first on our particular court allowed a chance to have a little rest before continuing their focused play through the brackets. We quickly passed by Absolute 16-2 to go on and play a well coached and tough Alcis Power 15-1 team. It took three well fought sets to finally get by them. This set us up for a winner take all game in the finals that was played as 1 game to 25. This match was played against Jumpstart 16-1 in which we won giving us first place for the day and the opportunity to move up to Copper for Power League #2. As each Tournament goes by I am seeing a closer-knit group that has the desire to listen, apply, and want to improve themselves as players and individuals. I believe as these qualities continue to improve Their level of success will also improve.
15-1
Davis 15-1 started out seeded 10th in the Indigo Division on
Saturday. We were ranked 3rd in our 3 team pool. We played
our first match against Vibe 16-1. We came out strong and won in
2 games! Our serving was tough - we had a total of 10 aces in the
match! Our second match in pool play was against PVC 16-2, we
kept the momentum from our first win and beat them in 2 games as
well. Our serving stayed consistent and we had 6 aces in that
match!
Bracket play began after a short lunch break and we were up against
YMCA Extreme Power 16-1. This team was small but very
scrappy. After losing the first game, we came back and won the
last 2 to keep us on the winners side of the bracket! Our second
match in bracket play was against NorCal Blue 15-2. We were
evenly matched against this team and finally got to play some real
volleyball! They took the first game, but we came back and won
the second game. We lost the last game in a close one. Our
3rd match in bracket play was against Odyessy 15-2. Again, we
were evenly matched against this team. We lost the first game,
came back and won the second game and then lost the 3rd game in another
close one.
We started out 10th and ended up 4th in the Indigo Division! The
girls played better than ever as a team, despite having one player home
sick and three of our 8 players who came that day battling the flu that
is going around! Everyone worked hard, played hard, covered each
other and the team moral was better than it ever has been! The
girls of 15-1 should be very proud of themselves!!
15-2
During the 12 hours the Davis VBC 15-2 team was
at Pioneer High School, the girls learned the ups and downs of
volleyball. We played a total of 6 matches and yet again went 0 and 6,
but it's the lessons that count. The day started out slow against
Slainte in the first game, but picked it up in the second.
Celine Bertero, our libero, came out swinging and got
2 kills from tough downballs that put the other team out of system.
D.S. Ashley Robaino had the opportunity to play front
row and made some nice off-side blocker passes. The game became tight
at the end as setter Nickole Hunley-Moore and middle
Adriane Wisner went on serving runs, but eventually
closed with a score of 20-25. The second match against Altamont was a
toughy that ended in (16-25) and (17-25) losses. However,
Ashley R. shined once again with great ball-handling
skills in the back row. At the net, middle blocker Megan
Bielawski throwing down tight overpasses for kills. The last
match of pool play ended in a rough loss to Club United in 3 games. The
girls played their best ball yet and gave the other team a real run for
their money. Megan came through once again and stuck
her serves when the first game was on the line to finish the game
25-22. The girls battled it out in the second game with right side
Avalon Lucero diving into poles and running down balls
passed off the court. Ball handling really stepped up when Melanie
Robaino passed nails that allowed hitters the opportunity to get some
great swings. Unfortunately, the ball didn't roll our way and the game
closed 22-25. The third game was a battle of serves and we missed 3
(out of a total 31 for the day)to aid the other team in a 8-15
victory. After a 2 hour break, the team came back in
bracket play a step behind. A lack of communication and energy resulted
in a 10-25 and 13-25 loss against Dynamix. However, middle blocker
Sammy Covington did a great job at the net with 2
blocks and 2 kills in the first game. Unfortunately, setter
Nickole H-M, in a collision with a teammate, sprained
her wrist and was rendered unable to play for the rest of the
tournament (and probably for a couple weeks in the future). This
resulted in Avalon Lucero stepping into the setting
spotlight to lead the team in the second game. Middle blocker
Adriane Wisner moved to the right side resulting in
Sammy and Megan as full time middles.
Even with a 3 point run in the end, the game ended in the other team's
favor.
The fifth match of the day showed the team's tiredness. Altamont
got the best of us in the second time we played them that day. The
team, a little disoriented with an unfamiliar line-up, struggled to
pass and put balls away. Near the end, however, outside hitter
Gilanne Del-Rosario had to blocks and an overpass kill
that gave us a little run. The final score was a rough
14-25. The last match was very similar to the fifth. A lack
of effort and
communication allowed the SF Tremors a victory 16-25 in a one gamer for
the last 2 seeds in the division. We ended up 8th and moving down into
a lower division, but the next qualifier is a new opportunity to get
our
seed back and prove our resiliency even after the unfortunate accident
of losing our setter.
