Cool Concert Report Opportunity
The Davis Youth Flute Choir under the direction of Maquette Kuper will sponsor a concert and master class with Japanese flutist Mihoko Watanabe on Thursday, May 29, at 7:00 p.m. at the Davis Art Center 1919 F Street, Davis.
Five outstanding young flutists will perform along with the Davis Youth
Flute Choir. The youngest performer will be Seunghyun Kim a sixth
grader at Patwin Elementary and a student of Virginia Thigpen. Marta
Drown, a seventh grader at Harper Jr. High School, and Hazel Jeong ,
senior at Davis High School, will represent the studio of Susan
Monticello. Priscilla Kim is a sophomore at Folsom High School and she
is a student of Alice Leneghan. Jane Seo is a sophomore at Davis High
School and she is a student of Maquette Kuper. The Davis Youth Flute
Choir will complete the evening concert under the direction of Maquette
Kuper.
Mihoko Watanabe is currently an assistant professor of flute at the
University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh and will begin teaching at Ball State
University in August 2008. She received her Doctorate of Musical Arts
from the University of Michigan, after earning a Master of Music from
the Eastman School of Music and a Bachelor of Music from Musashino
Academia Musicae in Japan. Her major teachers have included Bonita
Boyd, Leone Buyse, Ervin Monroe, Takao Kaeki and Fenwick Smith.
Dr. Watanabe is a recorded a performer of Duo Vivo, a flute duo she
formed with Dr. Alice Lenaghan when they were both students at the
University of Michigan. Duo Vivo has performed locally on the
Westminster Noon Concert and Crocker Art Museum concert series, and has
performed at several National Flute Association conventions. Dr.
Watanabe has been principal flutist of the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra
and a member of the Trio Piacere. As a researcher she specializes in
Japanese music and her article, "The Essence of Mei" is the cover
article of The Flutist Quarterly, Spring 2008.
The master class will help benefit the Davis Youth Flute Choir's trip to
Japan in June. Admission at the door is $10.00 adults, and $5.00
