A brief history of the Davis Chinese Association (A non-profit organization)

In January 2005, the Davis Chinese Association celebrated its 40th anniversary.  Our early years were filled with welcoming newcomers to Davis.  We started in 1965 as the Davis Chinese Fellowship.  Many of us were new faculty and students coming from all over the United States and abroad, settling in the small town of Davis.  We became a warm and friendly group.  As Davis grew, so did our group.

Today, we not only continue to welcome newcomers to Davis, but also encourage participation in the Davis community.  We began by going into the Davis schools, teaching the students about Chinese language and culture.  Later, we hosted the official signing of the Davis-Qufu Sister City Declaration.  More recently, we supported the Mondavi Center's efforts to bring students from local needy schools to see school matinee performances.  We have a stone in the plaza of the Robert and Magrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, UC Davis, commemorating our support of the Mondavi Center.  We proudly continue to help create strong ties within the Davis community and beyond.

To commemorate our 40th anniversary, we began an endowment to help fund yearly scholarships to Davis Senior High School students of Chinese descent.   In June 2005, we presented our first scholarships.  We raised over $20,000 and the interest earned from the endowment fund will be used to fund one or more scholarships annually.
