1939 Davis Promotional Flyer Discovered, report by John Lofland

At a Sacramento "postcard and paper" show recently, I discovered a 1939 flyer apparently published by the Davis Chamber of Commerce extolling Davis as "the ideal place in which to make a home and raise a family."

I have copied the flyer in pdf and reproduced it at:

Three aspects of the flyer are epecially striking to me.

First,
the entire point of it is to entice people to move to Davis. This is rather a stark contrast with views commonly expressed in the town of late.

Second, the authors go out of their way to say that "Davis rightfully boasts of all the conveniences enjoyed by city folks." Items such as electricity, a sewer system and paved streets are then enumerated. This suggests that in 1939 one could not assume that places like Davis had "all the conveniences."

Third, one is told that "the standard of living in Davis is the best" because "no foreign residential problem confronts the community, thus assuring the prospective settler that Davis is the ideal place in which to make a home and raise a family." I leave it to the reader to decode this statement.
