Open House 2008 is a success!
On October 1st, 2008 we held our 2nd annual Open House and a great time
was had by all! Here are some highlights of the event:
- There were ten information and activities tables, ranging from
learning about weed prevention to learning about compost from our
friends at Project Compost.
- Market Chef Jaymes Luu made a great gazpacho using garden
vegetables, which was a big hit.
- For the kids we had activities including insect mask-making and
seed planting, which they really enjoyed.
- In our Sensory Garden, we had 8 "Scent-sational" stations that we
created. The idea behind each station was to have people compare
the fragrance of particular plants to the fragrance of the food or herb
that they resemble most. So, for example, next to our chamomile,
we had a mason jar filled with apples because when you rub chamomile
leaves and smell the fragrance on your hands, it smells like
apples. Similarly, we had lemon rind to smell, in a mason jar,
next to the lemon verbena. Many people commented on how much they
enjoyed this exhibit.
- Finally, our show-stopper of the evening was the unveiling of our
new ceramic mosaic sculpture by local artist Mark Rivera, which was
funded by a City Arts Grant and The Wardrobe. The sculpture
depicts butterflies and hummingbirds feasting on and pollinating the
gardens, and is a strikingly fantastic addition to Central Park.
Mark himself was on hand to talk to people about his process and his
creation.
- We also gave out free seed packets of several native wildflowers
and the spectacular Tower
of Jewels, of which many people partook.
