Californians want more accountability and transparency from government, and they deserve a government that works — providing essential education, health, public safety and other services that are efficient and effective.

California Forward’s model initiative, the Government Performance and Accountability Act, seeks a constitutional amendment to stabilize the state budget; make local governments more accountable; and encourage local governments and agencies to work together, make the best use of available resources and provide quality services.

On Tuesday, Jan. 10, Saving California Communities will host Sunne Wright McPeak, California Forward Action Fund chair, and Jim Mayer, California Forward executive director, in a discussion of the proposed initiative.

What constitutional changes are proposed? How will these changes support healthy communities? What difference will they make for the people of California? What other important reforms are under way?

The event is co-hosted with the Davis Chamber of Commerce and begins at 7 p.m. at the Hallmark Inn, 110 F St. in downtown Davis.

Saving California Communities is a group of Yolo community members who joined forces to advocate for governance reform. This group brings together county, city and school elected representatives, educators, parents, students, health professionals, university and community college representatives, senior citizens, government employees and business owners.

California Forward is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working to bring government closer to the people and move the state in the right direction — forward.

“We believe empowered local communities are best-equipped to solve their own problems, and there is a critical link between many of the problems that threaten our future and our state government, which has become ineffective, unresponsive and unable to fix itself,” according to a statement from the organization.

“Local governments in California face several years of tight budgets — with consequences for classrooms and libraries, and services to neglected children, the elderly and the mentally ill. These public hardships are matched with private ones — and aggravated by a growing concern that the middle-income jobs that disappeared with the recession may not come back with the recovery.”
