Getting involved with Harper PTO:
It has been six years since the first day Harper opened its doors back in 2004, and we can truly say that Harper Junior High has become a great school with a committed staff, dedicated teachers, and a wonderful parent and student community. With your student in Jr. High, you might ask – why join the PTO? PTO offers a way for parents and guardians to get to know the place where your students will spend a major part of their day and the people with whom they will spend it.
There are several ways to get involved and become an integral part of our community:
Listserv: Please read your e-news messages from Harper & PTO. The school and the PTO have a combined listserv and each family that provides an email address to the front office will automatically be signed up to receive daily school bulletins (the list of announcements that your student will hear each day), PTO announcements and reminders of important school events. The listserv is provided to us at no cost by the Davis Community Network, and your email address will be kept private. This is a wonderful way to keep on top of what’s happening at Harper!
Membership: Join PTO! Many of you Joined PTO at the begining of the year - GREAT! If you haven't yet, you still can. Members are the backbone of any organization and ours is no different. Membership dues are one of our largest revenue sources and the cost is only $10 per parent/guardian member. Please return the enclosed blue membership form, along with your check made payable to “Frances Harper PTO”. We welcome and encourage any additional donations and your generosity is greatly appreciated.
Volunteers: Parent volunteers serve in many different capacities. Please review the orange PTO Volunteer Opportunities form and discover how you can contribute. Each volunteer opportunity will be discussed at our first PTO meeting on September 8, so feel free to bring this form with you to the meeting, learn more about your options, and complete it that evening. There are many ways to help – including in the classroom, career skills, translations, etc.
Painless Fundraising: There are two opportunities to donate to Harper PTO that cost you nothing! The first is eScrip, a program that generates donations from merchants like Safeway and Macy’s. Please go to www.escrip.com to sign up. Our group number is 500000213 and our school name is listed as Frances Harper Jh Pto. The second way is by using the Nugget Market scrip card. These reusable cards can be loaded with cash value at the store, and then all purchases made with that card will generate a 3% donation to us when you designate “Harper JHS PTO” as the beneficiary. The cards can be picked up at the PTO table on registration days, at PTO meetings, or at Nugget Markets.
If you have any questions or concerns about the Harper PTO, please contact Reem Awad-Rashmawi, PTO President, at harperpto@gmail.com.

Prevent teen drinking and drug use
The PTAs and Parent Groups of the DJUSD secondary schools have joined together in a public information campaign to educate parents about the need to prevent teen drinking and drug use. Hundreds of parents from Davis High, Da Vinci Academy, Harper, Holmes, Emerson, DSIS and King have pledged:
· To host only alcohol-free,
tobacco-free and drug-free parties for teens
· To discourage teens from consuming
alcohol, tobacco or other drugs in their homes; and
· To discourage their teen(s) from
attending unsupervised parties.
Click here http://www.davisparentsdo.org/ to see the list of parents who have made this pledge, and to learn more about this parent/grass roots effort.
