The Spare Changer

Join us as we explore the concerns of the sheltered and unsheltered poor as well as the insights and recommendations of social services providers seeking solutions. Monthly themes range from Affordable Housing to Causes and Common Misconceptions About The Homeless to Living Paycheck to Paycheck to Disenfranchisement From Mainstream Society to Homelessness By Choice to Quality of Life infractions... and more. Often submissions to The Spare Changer are penned by long time members of the homeless community, yet many are not. Some articles are actually a compendium of questionnaire responses while others are verbatim dictations of comments expressed by the sheltered and unsheltered poor blessed with compassion if not with polished writing skill. Still other articles and entries are submitted by administrators and volunteers of non-profits and governmental agencies with a mandate to ease the strain of those of us living on a fixed budget or no budget at all. "There but for the grace of God go I" emerges as the one common thread you will see underlying their motivation to work so hard in meeting the challenges of the marginally served.

Our mission is simple: To inform the uninformed, to entertain, and most importantly to foster pride and self- respect within and among the sheltered and un-sheltered poor. We do this by offering something to you, our valued reader. Your donation, in this time of increased budget cuts to social services, narrows the gap between basic needs you and I may take for granted, but which remain unmet by social service agency funding and the truly courageous efforts of the sheltered and un-sheltered poor. “It is better to give than to receive,” says The Bible. We say it is even better to give something back. Read ‘The Spange’ and Enjoy!

You will receive NOT the 12 Page Street Editions popular downtown, available at the Davis Food Coop, and of course Farmer's Market BUT, INSTEAD,  The Publisher's Daily Blog! That's right! See our world through the eyes of an individual who promises to be perceptive and strives to be fair; a man who has lived more than half his life un-sheltered, but who now has a place to call his own.
