Hike (2B). Murderers Bar, Auburn State Recreation Area
This loop begins with a pleasant stroll along the Middle Fork American River, then climbs up past the quarry to join the Olmstead Loop trail and Pointed Rocks, only to drop rapidly back down Training Hill and Western States Trail to the cars. The hike is approximately 7 miles with 1100’ cumulative elevation gain. Bring lunch, water, good boots, and essentials. Snowshoe Hike, China Wall (1A) is cancelled. Reason for change: While there is still snow on ground at Summit, conditions will not be good after another 7 days of melting - likely be marginal with occasional bare spots and soft snow at best. There will be a hike to Tahamaroo Bar instead.
Tamaroo Bar Hike (1A)
We’ll hike a 4-5 mile loop down from the dam overlook in Auburn to Tamaroo Bar on the American River. We’ll enjoy a break on a rocky beach alongside the river while having lunch. Hike will provide many opportunities to see remains of the efforts to build the Auburn Dam as well as a natural looking section of the river. Meet at 9:30am at Burger King on Lincoln Way at Foresthill Exit in Auburn off I-80, or at Auburn Dam Overlook Parking area off Pacific Ave in Auburn at 9:45. No dogs. Rain cancels. 2/7/18 Snowshoe Hike, China Wall (1A) (cancelled) : We’ll snowshoe either at China Wall, past Foresthill, or somewhere along the I-80 corridor, depending on snow conditions. Bring $ for Snow Park pass, if required, at site chosen. Bring essentials, snowshoes, poles, lunch, water, and dress in layers. Meet at 9:30 am at Burger King on Lincoln Way in Auburn at Foresthill Exit off I-80. No dogs. Rain, winter storm warning or chain controls cancels. Hike (1A). Foresthill Divide Loop – Overlook (Canyon Keepers Hike)
We’ll hike a lesser-used section on the south side of the larger Foresthill Divide loop. We’ll pass some very old, large oaks as we traverse the rolling oak woodlands. We’ll leave the loop to visit a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Middle Fork American River. We will have lunch as we enjoy the view, which stretches from Poverty Bar/American Canyon to the Quarry and Auburn. Hike is approx. 4 miles with elevation change of about 300 ft. Have lunch, water, $ for parking fee or state parking pass and essentials. No dogs. Rain cancels. Meet at Grizzly Bear parking area (1st on right coming from Auburn) on Foresthill Road at 9:40 am or in Auburn at Burger King, on Lincoln Way at Foresthill Exit off I-80 at 9:30 am. Hike (1A). Weimar Institute (Hike description changed at Leader's request, 2.8.18)
This is a little treasure surprisingly close to
home. The trails wind through the foothills surrounding the Institute, which is
a retreat that allows the public to use its network of trails. There is also a
bit of interesting history associated with the Institute that served as a TB
clinic in the early 1900s. About 4.5 miles and 800’ elevation gain. Bring lunch, water and essentials. No dogs.

Hike (1A). Frog Pond, Berryessa Snow Mt. National Monument (Yolano Group)
This is a pleasant hike in the Cache Creek region that features widely varying ecosystems, ranging from riparian to chaparral to oak-grasslands. We’ll enjoy lunch beside an old ranch pond that often resounds with the croaks of large frogs. The hike is a 5+ mile loop with about 600’ elevation gain. Bring lunch, water, and essentials.
