DHS PTA MEETING

MINUTES

January 3, 2007

 

Attendance

Kathy Magrino, Stacey Black, Shelley McFarland, Mike Cawley, Sheila Smith, Tsui Chang, Linda Parfitt, Laurie Rollins, , Gabrielle Jimenez Tabor, Irma Daoud, Grace Salvagno, Sarah Zhu, Susan Lovenburg, Stacy Desideri, Laurel Sousa, Karen Schelegle, Joan Anton, Cathy Tkach, Jean Meyer, Tom McHale, Chris Majestic, Colleen Jordan, Jane Schafer-Kramer.

 

Call to Order & Introductions

The meeting was called to order by President Laurie Rollins.  Introductions were made all around.  Stacey Black was nominated, seconded and unanimously elected DHS PTA Secretary.  The nominating committee will be forming, contact Linda Parfitt if you are interested in serving on this committee.

Laurie Rollins brought forward a community concern regarding student disrespect of the neighborhood surrounding Scripps Drive during school lunchtime.  Discussion ensued.

May 2nd, at 7pm on the quad was proposed for a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the DHS PTA.  Kathy Magrino proposes to invite past PTA presidents to the event, and hopes to have some student musical performances and entertainment.

This year’s State PTA convention is May 3-6.  We may send 3 delegates , if the budget allows.

Vice-Principal Sheila Smith described the proposed enhancements to safety and security for this year’s Bogus Ball which is tentatively planned for March 9th.  A very long discussion ensued.

 

Approval of November Minutes

Minutes from December’s meeting were reviewed, corrected and approved.

 

Teacher Report – Gabrielle Jimenez-Tabor

The Jazz choir annual cabaret is February 10th and 11th at Emerson Jr. High.  Tickets are available at www.dhsjazzchoir.org.

The academic decathlon team participated in the Northern California Scrimmage on December 16th.  Two decathletes won medals.  The team is preparing for its next competition on February 3rd.

 

Treasurer and Membership Report - Shelley McFarland

See attached Income and Expenditures report.  The cost of the newsletter printing is running from $300-$400 per month through the school district.

 

Unfundraiser update – Laurie Rollins 

$15,421 has been collected through the unfundraiser.  All the top funding priorities have been funded.                      
 

Principal Report - Mike Cawley

At today’s collaboration day there were a variety of programs including teachers trying out new High School Exit Exam software and IG Pro (a grade program).

 

Counselor Report – Jean Meyer

There is an exchange student that needs a new host family.  Financial aid night is January 11th at 7pm in the MPR.  2nd semester begins soon (first semester finals are 1/22 through 1/26).  Jean reported that parents often ask for online course recommendations.  Counselors do not make such recommendations.  Currently, UC does not accept any online college prep classes.

 

Vice-Principal Report – Sheila Smith

Sheila thanked the PTA for the Bogus Ball discussion.  Also, as scheduling for next school year begins in earnest in February, a parent is welcome to sit in on/help with scheduling of singleton/semester courses.

 

 

 

Committee & Parent Rep Reports

Chris Majestic reported that at the most recent Human Relations committee meeting students said that they wanted an even more open campus.

 

Announcements

Emerson PTA will be having a parent education night on January 9th at 7pm on the topic of alcohol and drug abuse.  All are welcome.


The meeting was adjourned at 9 pm.
