Wednesday, August 5: Hike (1A). Flora Lake
This short, easy hike starts out on a portion of the PCT in the Donner Summit area then goes up to Flora Lake. It has some great views and is a favorite summer hike. Plan on at least an hour for lunch at Flora Lake. Bring lunch, water, and essentials. Rain cancels. No dogs. Meet in Auburn at Burger King, on Lincoln Way at Foresthill Exit off I-80 at 9:00 am. Tuesday, August 11: Hike (2B). Lake Winnemucca & Round Top Lake, Carson Pass
From Carson Pass we follow the picturesque Yosemite to Tahoe Trail past Frog Lake, beneath Elephants Back, and on to spectacular, windy, wildflowery Winnemucca Lake at the base of Round Top Peak. We continue up to barren but beautiful Round Top Lake for lunch. We then retrace our route back to Carson Pass. The hike is about 7 miles with about 1000’ elevation gain. Wednesday, August 12 : Walk (1A) Through History Hike on Donner Summit
Hike will combine great scenery with talk on the impact of Donner Summit area on history of California and U.S. See faint pictographs left by early Native Americans, walk along portions of first wagon route to California, trace remains of Dutch Flat – Donner Lake Wagon Road, walk on China Wall, as well as other portions of First Transcontinental Railroad. We will not always be on a trail, so be prepared for uneven, rocky footing as well as initial ascent from Rainbow Bridge area up to Sugar Bowl Access Road. Bring lunch, lots of water (there is no shade) and rain gear in case of showers. Bring strong flashlight for tunnel. Meet at Burger King, on Lincoln way at Foresthill Exit off I-80 near Auburn at 9:00 am. No dogs. Leader: Sheila Toner, 530-886-0673.
Tuesday, August 25: Hike (2B) Maud Lake
From near Wrights Lake off Hwy 50 we follow the Rockbound Pass Trail up, down, and around to shallow but picturesque Maud Lake. The Rockbound Pass cirque rises spectacularly over our lunch and swim site there. We then retrace our route. The hike is approximately 8.5 miles with 1100’ cumulative elevation gain.
