July, 2015

Wednesday, July 1: Hike (1A).  Old Lincoln Hwy and Dutch Flat Donner Lake Wagon Route (DFDLWR) Loop

We’ll hike from just above Donner Lake up to the China Wall area of the Donner Summit using portions of the DFDLWR from the 1860’s as well as an early and later section of the Lincoln Hwy – the first transcontinental auto route.  We’ll pass one of the early ads placed on rocks along the auto route.   This section of these two old routes from the mid 1800’s and early 1900’s across the Donner Pass was recently purchased and open to the public thanks to the Donner Land Trust.   History – scenery – and a nice trail (It has just been repaired due to 2014 flood) with a gradual grade make this a great outing.  Hike is about 5 miles with approx 750 ft elevation gain/loss.  Rain cancels.  No dogs.  Meet in Auburn at Burger King, on Lincoln Way at Foresthill Exit off I-80 at 9:00 am.   Leader: Sheila Toner: 530-886-0673.

Rain cancels. No dogs. Meet in Auburn at Burger King, on Lincoln Way at Foresthill Exit off I-80 at 9:00 am. Leader: Sheila Toner, 530-886-0673.

Thursday, July 9: Hike (2B).  Showers Lake, Carson Pass

From above Caples Lake on Hwy 88 we steeply ascend a high ridge, imbibe spectacular views north and south, and then descend steeply to Showers Lake (just 2 miles so far).  After an early lunch and swim we meander around the ridge through diverse habitats with minor ups and downs, and lo!  There are the cars.   The hike is about 8 miles with about 1550’ cumulative elevation gain.  Bring lunch, water, and essentials.  Meet at 9:00 am at the McDonalds in Placerville (take Broadway exit from Hwy 50).    No dogs.  Rain cancels.  Leader: Jim Cramer, (530) 756-3973 or cramerjc@gmail.com
