Hike (1A) ; Omega Section - Pioneer Trail, A Walk in the Woods
Starting at the Omega Rest area off Hwy. 20, we’ll do an easy out and back hike of approx. 5 miles along a mostly wide, shady forest trail. This is small section of the longer Pioneer Trail, which follows old wagon route dating from the 1850s. Bring lunch, water and essentials. Rain cancels. Hike (1A); Summit Lake
We will hike to Summit Lake from Boreal exit off I-80. Our approx. 5.5 mile outing with an elevation gain/loss of approx. 300 ft. offers a hike through a variety of forest, meadows, and open granite areas with a mix of short ups & downs, a few level spots and a creek crossing. This scenic area, just north of I-80 often abounds in wildflowers. Plan on a long lunch break at the lake. Bring lunch, water and rain gear in case of showers. No dogs. Hike (2A); Fordyce Creek from Fuller Lake
Water is released from Fuller Lake down to Lake Spaulding during the day to generate prime time electricity as part of a 7-lake hydroelectric system. We will follow the funky water canal and pipe down to Spaulding Lake; walk around Spaulding Lake and then up Fordyce Creek to a beautiful cascade/waterfall. After lunch we retrace our route. The hike is about 8 miles with 600+’ elevation gain. Bring lunch, water, and essentials. Hike (1B); Rowton Peak
From the Ice Lakes/Royal Gorge area, we’ll hike up to Razorback Ridge and Rowton Peak, elevation 7480’. Along the ridge, we’ll have expansive views of the North Fork of the American River and the Granite Chief Wilderness. About 5 miles with a total 1,025 ft. elevation gain. Bring lunch, water and essentials. No dogs. Heavy rain cancels. Day Hike (2B); Caples Creek/Silver Fork (Yolano Group)
In the Crystal Basin area southwest of Kyburz, we will ascend Caples Creek to Government Meadow, ford the river, climb over a modest ridge, and descend Silver Fork back to cars. Be prepared for thigh-high sandy river ford. The hike is approximately 8 miles with 1200’ cumulative elevation gain. Bring lunch, water, and essentials. Hike (1A); Abbotts Lagoon, Point Reyes
We’ll hope for a cool lunch at the beach at Abbotts Lagoon. This approx. 3-mile out-and-back hike is mostly level, with a fresh-water lagoon and an ocean beach to enjoy. Dress in layers; wear shoes suitable for a sandy beach. We’ll stop at the Marin Cheese Factory on the way in. Bring water, lunch, poles if you use them and binoculars if you enjoy wildlife viewing.
