Minutes

Present: Linda Parfitt, Kathy Magrino, Amy Seropian, Barb Engel, Priyan Kaul, Shelley McFarland, Mike Cawley, Dorothy Yerxa, Michele Larsen, Amy Schulte, Jean Meyer, Sheila Smith, Marnelle Gleason, Laurie Rollins, Shelley Bronzan, Tsui Chang, Susan Lovenburg

The meeting was called to order at 7:35 pm by Laurie Rollins.

The following items were added to the agenda:
•Approval of the by-laws
•Nominations for Student Scholarships (seniors only) are due April 7.

The corrected minutes of the March 1 meeting were unanimously approved.

Treasurer’s and Membership Report – Marnelle Gleason – The Unfundraiser brought in $16,156. 220 people have contributed. Big donors included Novozymes of Davis for $1,000, Arcadia Bio Employees for $900; and Sunrise Rotary and the Rotary Club of Davis for $800. There were many personal checks for $100 and over as well. The cost of the digital cameras, computers and monitors for Biology classes is $14,500 and the remainder of the funds raised goes to Ag Mechanics. Laurie Rollins has approved the purchase of the microscopes.

The bulk mail permit cost $160 and Marnelle billed each of the three junior highs $40 each. Harper has paid.

The IRS reversed the penalty of $2,082.75. Our balance owing is now 0.

Counselor’s Report – Jean Meyer – Counselors are working on the master schedule for next year as well as Summer School and contacting parents whose students will receive a D or F on their quarter grade report.

Principal’s/Assistant Principal Report – Sheila Smith and Mike Cawley – STAR testing will take place April 25-28. The school is discouraging parents from waiving their students from participating. DHS must assess 95% of students to meet API requirements. Seniors will not be tested but are required to attend school that day.

John Mitchell and Pamela McMillen are the DHS representatives on the WASC committee. We are in the 3rd year of a 6 year accreditation and have identified four goals for the DHS action plan.

The Bogus Ball was well attended (800 students), but there were problems with both dress and alcohol use. The dance needs to be better chaperoned (possibly introduce stipend for staff to attend), with better defined rules for next year or it may have to be canceled, even though it is the biggest fundraiser for the Senior Prom. The Junior Prom did not have the same problems.

Mike reported that the DHS API score was 845. 1,070 students took the STAR test last year.

Parent Connect is a useful tool for parents. While it is not the official attendance record, it does provide an indication of whether the child was at school. To use it, parents must first apply for a password. Parent use will drive teacher participation.

Teacher Report – Amy Shulte – Tim Peevyhouse thanked the PTA for the digital cameras for biology classes and Michele Larsen thanked the PTA for funds contributed to the Ag Mechanics program. Amy also mentioned that Human Relations Week and Library Week fall in April and circulated copies of the FFA Newsletter.

Student Report – Senior Ball tickets go on sale April 17. Cost is $55/person. Attendance of 400 is needed to break even but 700 are expected to attend.

The Junior class made $12,000 on the Junior Prom for next year’s Senior Ball.

Student Government is working on designing planners and interviewing for next year.

Laurie Rollins invited student representatives to attend every PTA meeting and report on the activities of each grade level.

Old Business – There was a report on a noon-hour talk with Hashim Hassan and Annie Smiley on Saving Lives in Darfur on Tuesday, April 18 at noon in room P-14.

Kathy Magrino reviewed changes to the PTA bylaws which included: a increase of dues to $10, eliminating the family membership category, elections to take place in April, addition of an Executive Vice President, Historian position removed from the Executive Board and now to be appointed by the President, renaming monthly meetings to have four general membership meetings and the remainder to be PTA Executive Board meetings.

The revised bylaws were unanimously approved.

Committee Updates – Laurie Rollins reported that the Curriculum and Instruction Committee will be looking for a new chair when Sharon Hallberg retires.

New Business – Kathy Magrino presented the slate of nominees for next year’s PTA Executive Board. There were no new nominations from the floor. The slate presented was:

President: Laurie Rollins Executive Vice President: Kathy Magrino 1st Vice President: Eileen Jaffe 2nd Vice President: Susan Lovenburg Treasurer: Shelley McFarland Secretary: Melissa Franke Auditor: Dian Baker

The slate of candidates was unanimously approved.

The May meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 3 and will begin at 7:00 pm. Representatives from the Best Uses of Schools Task Force will make a presentation at 7:00, followed by routine business and a presentation by Sharon Hallberg on the DHS library at 8:30 pm.

The June 7 meeting will by an Old Board/New Board meeting at Laurie Rollins house and will begin at 7:00 pm.

The Staff Appreciation Luncheon/Custodian’s Dinner will be held on May 10 and Joan Anton will need assistance with food donations.

Linda Parfitt will be Parliamentarian next year, Joan Anton will continue with Hospitality, Barb Engel will be responsible for the Newcomer’s Welcome, Amy Seropian and Shelley Bronzan will be responsible for newsletter mailing. Contrary to what we thought, Susan Cotterel will not continue as newsletter editor and that position will be advertised.

We are seeking nominations for Educator of the Year and Parent Volunteer of the Year (must be in their last year at DHS). Deadline is May 1.

Teachers will recommend students for the PTA Student Scholarships. This is not based on academic merit.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:07 pm by Laurie Rollins.

Respectfully submitted by Susan Lovenburg, DHS PTA Secretary
