DAVIS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION MEETING NOVEMBER 3, 2004

Parent Ed Topic: Suicide Prevention 6:15 p.m.

Present: Gina Deleiden, Laurie Rollins, Paula Badham, Carla Lehn, Guy Michelier, Mike Cawley, Torsten Christian, Molly Sundstrom, Lynda Yancher, Jennifer Elmore, Heidi Loper, EunMi Cho

Meeting called to order at 7:34 p.m. by Gina Daleiden, Executive V.P. and Laurie Rollins

I. Everyone introduced themselves.

II. Newcomers Welcome for new parents to Davis--Gina is working on it. It will be November 15th or November 16th. This will be a social setting and she encouraged us as parents to atttend.

III. Treasurer's Report-Carla Lehn--Our major expense last month was the newsletter at $1,032.56. We currently have $29,185.62 in the account.

IV. Principal's Report-Mike Cawley--The P building opened last month. New lawn is being put in. The elevator is to be inspected before using. There is no heat in the weight room, dance and wrestling room. Space heaters will be utilized. The old humanities building will become an art/science building in a few weeks. The grand opening for the Performing Arts building will be November 18th. Three students won N.C.T.E. national awards. One of our students, Phan____, is a Westinghouse science finalist for her work on dental caries. This will take place in Berkeley. November 12th is a school day--not a holiday.

The October minutes were unanimously approved.

V. Counselor's Report-Jennifer Elmore--Jennifer is a new counselor and is working part-time here and DaVinci. She is bilingual -Spanish /English. She has a mental health background and is working with Spanish speaking families. November 17th is Student Success Night from 7:30 to 8:30. Students and parents can attend. Increasing Student Success is an after school program worth 2 ½ credits. You need to be invited by counselors to attend. Volunteers and credentialed teachers help out. Letter of recommendation for private schools deadline was November 1, but they are still taking them. The SAT I will be in May. December is the registration. Korean is the second largest language spoken by our students.

VI. Vice-Principal's Report--Heidi Loper--With regard to Friendship Day, she will get an article on the website for our newsletter. Collaboration Day--parents may be interested. It is now every Tuesday. For the teachers the 1st Tuesday is a regular meeting. 2nd Tuesday is co-curricular with other departments, 3rd Tuesday is Action Plan Collaboration to work on WASK report and the last Tuesday is departmental. They will evaluate to see if this works.

VII. Teacher's Report--None given. The Student Report was given by Torsten Christian--The Jr. Prom will be December 11th. Lifetouch will do the background pictures . Weekly meetings are being held.

Molly Sundstrom, student representative for the senior class reported on the Sr. Class Ball. They are getting started early. The floor plan is coming. The grad announcement will be done by Jostens and that is being worked on. Homecoming is over. For Youth in Government Day, Lois Wolk will speak. The students will shadow 42 elected officials. This is for Junior and Seniors only. This will be broadcast Thursday by the school board. This should broadcast on November 8th.

VIII. Committee Reports

Guy Michelier-As of October 31st, we have 236 individual (incl. 10 teachers) and 407 families for a total of 1,050 members. The estimate for the cost of copying the directories is $1,450. GATE--The new scores needed to qualify to be considered qualified for GATE services is 95% on the verbal or non-verbal portion of the test and a 95% total. November 20th is International Day--for E.S.L. and will focus on literacy and transition.

C & I next meeting will be site council and C.&I together. Scheduling issues are the main concern. New classes are being introduced and the art requirement is now 1 year of the same art. This effects the class of 2006. We want to pump up art survey to get it to qualify for the U.C. requirement.

Laurie and Gina reported on homework/workgroup meeting. With regard to homework policies, homework can’t be assigned Friday and due by Monday, but students can have weekend homework.

IX. Old Business--none to report

X. New Business--Tsui reported that Barbara Engle is the new volunteer coordinator and the newsletter mailing coordinator needs more help. This will be announced via the PTA listserv and in the newsletter.

XI. Meeting was Adjourned at 8:25 p.m.
